I think you nailed Farcry 2 there. I dont get why so many people come down heavy on it - I loved it and is one of those games I keep going back to.

I think that's the problem most people have with Far Cry, when you kill a bunch of henchmen on the way to the objective in an RPG it's a grind, when you do it in an FPS, it's the point of the game. So many people just seemed to expect the wrong thing from it.

Fallout 3 turned out "very RPGYey" because it's a role playing game. It just happened to have a first person perspective.

I think Fallout 3 and Far Cry 2 were both trying to be big open FPSs, and Fallout 3 turned out very RPGey, with more of the rigid constraints of that genre. Far Cry 2 didn't surrender an inch to the RPG pedigree of non-linear games, despite a bit of weapons-upgrading and so on - we've had that in Doom and Quake, albeit in a more... linear fashion. I agree with Tom, I think that Far Cry 2 is trying to answer the RPG's claim to the Open World. By shooting it in the face.

I don't think Far Cry 2 was competing with Fallout 3 in any way. Certainly if you compare the two of them from the angle you're coming from then Fallout will come out better, but I think Far Cry was aiming for a completely different type of gameplay and succeeded very well. I certainly had no "RPG expectations" going into the game, and I don't believe the game has any either.

Giving the player two different ways to complete a mission doesn't bring Far Cry into RPG territory. It's just another way of giving the player extra objectives that increase the difficulty of a mission, which FPS games have been doing for quite a while now - since GoldenEye in fact.

The game felt like a grind to me, the tension of any situation, the intensity required to take out your target was quickly extinguished by trawling through the huge sandbox despatching already killed guards at checkpoints. Why give me a sprawling landscape if I can't explore it? Almost a breakthrough game, but the plot holes and basic flaws let it down, a shame really.

Compared to other sandbox games, Fallout 3 and 'other well known members of the genre' it lacked detail and any compassion for the protagonist quickly dissipated.
