From the first paragraph I was thinking violence is the conflict that players face and then I read more where you said that. The main payoff in any game is the reward from such a conflict. In FPSers we get to blow shit up, racing we cross the finish line first, MMO we get to become a legendary hero to twart the evil forces at bay, any sports game we have to beat the other team. Without conflict, thus an interesting challenge, the games would be like playing a spreadsheet otherwise. I think violence is a visual example of a conflict but not in total required. For any multiplayer game its this tug and pull back and forth with each player that drives the game to be fun.

Very interesting and i agree to an extent, however i have heard some people say that they play violent games such as COD4 so they can do something they can not usually do (unless in the Armed Forces) and that's simulate the army experience, not violence for the sake of a few points.

Flight simulators are tremendously popular and the only violence in those games is crashing.. not something a normal buyer of those games intends, unlike me and you..

My point being that yes most games require violence to be fun, interesting or even playable but a good portion do not require it at all - these are flight sims, simulation games (sims, second life etc),racing and most sports (exception to rugby and American "football" which are violent anyway and possibly football)

I agree violence is needed in most multiplayer games but is most defiantly not a requirement.

If we all had violent lives (army, drugs baron etc) then the vast majority would be playing non-violent games, however the majority dont have violent lives and therefore play violent games - knowing that if they die etc, its only a game..
