Offensive games

In general I don’t tend to get offended unless I’m being personally attacked. I don’t like racism, homophobia etc, but I’m not going to go on some complaining rampage because some idiot is shouting their stupid views to the world. To this end, I thought I would take a look into how our beloved medium of gaming has supported people voicing these same views. After a quick google for “most offensive game” 2 turned up that caught my eye. Lets have a little look.

The first one is called JFK reloaded. In it you recreate the assassination of JFK from the view point of Lee Harvey Oswald. You watch as the motorcade drives past and you are tasked to make the kill in the most historically accurate way possible.

Offensive: jfk reloaded: nice view

Now, I don’t really know the details into how JFK was killed, so recreating the shot exactly is somewhat impossible for me – especially with the lack of assistance within the game. So what can I do? Well, I just took pot shots at JFK. I never scored highly and I didn’t really know how to get any better so quit soon after I started. The games from 2004 so looks predictably dated but I think they have got the balliastic simulation pretty spot on (from my limited knowledge and the detailed display it shows you after each ’round’). The question I need to answer though is whether I found the content offensive or not. Well, no I didn’t. I wasn’t around when JFK died and I don’t particularly care about it to be honest. From what I can see from the game, it’s not about having fun – it’s about being educated in great detail about how JFK was killed and it emphasises that if you do it right you will see it disproves any conspiracy theory. It’s done tastefully and rather scientifically – a long way off from being a fun arcade shooter. I don’t really know how after actually playing this thing anyone could be offended to be honest.

Offensive: jfk reloaded: pot shot

Next on the agenda is “Ethnic Cleansing” – a game made by some neo nazis in which you are tasked with ending the “race war” that has started up.

Offensive: ethnic cleansing:title screen

Now, let me just get across how extreme this thing is. One of the characters you can play as is a fully robed Klan member. Your mission is to kill a load of ‘negroes’ and mexicans. The negroes and mexicans boss is called ‘Big Nig’. After you kill Big Nig you then take on a load of jews in a subway. The title screen has an audio clip that says ‘white revolution is the only solution’. Oh dear.

Offensive: ethnic cleansing: killing

Ethnic Cleansing is a funny one. The content should really be offensive but the fact that it is so badly presented and made makes it comedy. It’s like a racist farce, or a family listening to their daily mail reading grandad on one of his rants. It’s so ill informed you find yourself laughing rather than having an argument because its just so very stupid. Am I offended by this? No. I can see why people would be, but to me it’s just to silly to be offensive.

Offensive: ethnic cleansing: clan outfit

So there you go, the two most offensive games – one of them turned out to be potentially educational and the other a deluded and rather hilarious racist rant which is as ridiculous as the views it’s trying to get across. What a strange world we live in. If you want to try these games yourself, well I wouldn’t bother. Not because they are oh so controversial, but just because they are both a bit rubbish and completely not worth your time.
