GTA IV – it was released a while ago, and when it first came out I really wanted it. The more I see of it though, the less I care. It looks like just another GTA, and while these are always fun they just aren’t always amazing.

The original GTA (the 2D one) was pretty much a perfect game. It was uncensored chaos and brought something genuinely new and thrilling to gaming. GTA 2 was…alright but far outdone by GTA London, which still wasn’t as good as GTA. They were just more of the same and novelty inevitably wears off. Eventually GTA 3 came along and was a breath of fresh air. It was 3D and had a proper city built around it. Superb. Vice City comes out and was really good – not really an advancement on 3 but definitely an improvement. Then comes San Andreas. Bloated, boring, frustrating, crappy looking San Andreas. Again, more of the same and the novelty had long worn off, but then again car chases, prostitute murdering, and general criminal hi-jinks will always be fun.
When the trailers for GTA IV started appearing I was genuinely excited. It looked fantastic. Amazing graphics, a city with atmosphere and…I don’t know….it looked like GTA would finally get some weight to it. I can’t really explain it but since GTA 2 the player has never really seemed part of the city, just placed in it. It never feels quite right. The weapons always feel flimsy, the NPC’s idiotic and the physics often laughable (and not in a good way)
I realise I’m probably making fuck all sense here so I’ll stop, but what I’m saying is this: GTA IV looks more mediocre with every passing week and with the amount of shitty bloatware that comes with it and is required to make it run (Games for Windows Live and Rockstar social club – both of which are terrible applications that cause nothing but trouble) I’m not going to be buying it any time soon – if at all. Ever.

personally if i could return steam games I would.. I have yet to actually get to play this. I bought it, installed it – then it half ran – missing textures etc. I have decent GFX card and thought it might be RAM related. (only had 4gb DDR) so upgraded to the following:
AMD Phenom 9955 2.6Ghz Quad Core,
1Tb HDD
4GB 1066 DDR2 RAM
same GFX Card (8600GTS 256mb)
the GTA:IV Sys Specs are:
Minimum System Requirements
* Operating System: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 OR Windows XP Service Pack 3
* Processor: Intel Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz or AMD Athlon X2 64 2.4GHz
* Memory/RAM: 1.5GB for Vista, 1GB for XP
* Hard Disk Space: 16GB Free
* Video Card: 256MB NVIDIA 7900 or 256MB ATI X1900
Recommended System Requirements
* Operating System: Windows Vista Service Pack 1 OR Windows XP Service Pack 3
* Processor: Intel Core 2 Quad 2.4GHz, AMD Phenom X3 2.1GHz
* Memory/RAM: 2.5GB for Vista, 2.5GB for XP
* Hard Disk Space: 18 GB Free
* Video Card: 512MB NVIDIA 8600 or 512MB ATI 3870
So with my GFX Card sitting somewhere between the minimum and the recommended and the rest of my system blitzing the recommended, I Still cannot run this game properly…
I’ll tell you why – The developers, in their infinite wisdom, decided to used GFX RAM instead of System RAM. they built in a device that says you are using X out of X amount of gfx ram. this restricts the games GFX…. You can turn this off by adding “-norestrictions” to the shortcut perameters..
My point being is that no game should be made only playable by the defining factor of the GFX RAM.. its just wrong! Thats what your system ram is for!
I would be tempted to contact valve and ask for a refund – if you are over minimum specs and it doesn’t work it shouldn’t be your problem.
the reason it doesnt work with your card Arazmus is because i uses memory on your graphics card. im runnning it on a similar system to yours but mine only has 2GB DDR3 ram and a 9800GTX 512mb, i can only run gta IV on medium for this -.- i would make a “good/mediocure” game if they had acctually utalised your system memmory? and maby a decent physics engine?
I know renegade.. i also stated that here:

That is exactly my point. my GFX card is in between the minimum and recommended specs.. still a stupid pholosopy by rockstar
oh yea ^^ i must have overread that biit :P
oops and i forgot to add…. “yes it is pritty stupid seeing as a 9800gtx can only run the game on average graphics -.-” grr
That is a bit rubbish. DDR3 eh? You running an I7?
my boards go256 MB DDR3 onbored ram… quite nifty
Facepalm
:D
