The explosion hits hard, looks like the jeep couldn’t take any more punishment. I’m alive, just, but in the middle of an open road and bleeding heavily. Need to get behind some cover. A few boulders are a tiny sprint away, they should do. Someone shouts then everything is muffled. What happened? Have I been hit? Can’t hold my own weight any more. I hear more shots coming from somewhere. The sun is still beating down on me as I fall to the floor. Colours start to fade. I black out.

“Get up!” echoes through my head. Am I dead? My eyes manage to open. It’s Nasreen. She stands over me then drags me up from the floor. I black out… A shout. I’m being dragged off the road. A soldier is pointing a gun at us. Nasreen shoots him three times. I black out… I’m on the floor behind a wall as I come back around. Gunshots everywhere. “Get up! Heal your wounds!” Nasreen is shouting at me as she fires into the dust filled Savannah. Colours start to fade back in and I can just about hear again. Dragging myself up from the floor Nasreen slaps a .45 into my hand. I’m still bleeding from a bullet lodged in my arm; have to ram a knife in there and pop it out then bandage myself up. I have 1 magical-heal syrette left.
Nasreen is still firing into the bushes that surround us but it sounds like most people are dead. I pop my head over the wall to check and am immediately met with shotgun fire. One of the shots clip me but not too badly. Can’t quite see where it came from so fire wildly into the bush. Silence. Did I hit him? Must have. The complete silence worries me, after a quick glance around I see Nasreen is still alive. Did I kill him? No one is firing on us so I can only assume so but after a search of the general area I can’t see any sign of a body.

I check my ammo – there isn’t much to check. Off in the distance is a hut full of supplies I passed by earlier. I leave Nasreen and head towards it. Pretty much as soon as I shut the door the sound of gunshots come from outside. Fuck. I load up and head back out. Shooting up from where I came from is a plume of blue smoke. Nasreen. It must have been the guy with the shotgun. Dam it! I run over to the smoke under a hail of shotgun fire and throw myself behind a rock. Peering out I see a guy running over to my flank. Could just run, but can’t screw over Nasreen – not now. I stand up and start running towards him – need to close in if I want to hit him. I don’t know why I didn’t just pull my assault rifle – it would have easily taken him at this range, but I just didn’t. Maybe it was panic, maybe it was stupidity, maybe it was because using the pistol she gave me felt right. Within a second he has seen me and starts to swing around, but too late. I steady the pistol and unload the entire clip.
Nasreen is screaming in pain and I’m hurt, but not critically. I rush over, lift her head up off the floor and shove my last syrette into her neck. She’s going to be ok. I have a look around and see a jeep still in tact but with steam billowing from the engine. It doesn’t take long to fix up the jeep and get my bearings. There is a target in a village a couple of minutes drive from here. I’ve got a few clips of ammo, no syrettes, a jeep with a massive gun mounted on the back, and the sun is shining. As I head off I think I can hear a car coming my way.
