The 5 best games of 2008 as far as I’m concerned. Do you need any more introduction? No? Good.
5. Mass Effect – An epic Sci-Fi RPG. I lost my save game pretty early on ages ago so I didn’t get that far through. What I can say is that I loved what I played and will be going back to it soon. A great blend of story and game which leaves you feeling actually in control of your character.
4. Race Driver: GRID – The best racing game of all time. Stylish, pretty, fast and exciting. Just the right balance of arcade fun and simulation, GRID really is an epic.

3.Far Cry 2: Awesomely fantastic as far as I’m concerned (I know some corners of the Internet disagree). It has it’s problems but at it’s core there is a solid shooter that is at least attempting to cover some new ground. So immersive I thought I actually had malaria*, so brutal it made me physically wince, and so emotional I was actually angry when that incident with Warren happened I shouted profanities at him.

*this may not be 100% true
2.Left 4 Dead: Valve produce another instant classic. Zombies, Co-Op, meaty guns, the Bastard a.i. director…just everything. As long as it’s updated every so often there should be no reason why I won’t be playing this forever. Left 4 Dead has brought our little community of gamers together like nothing else and made for so many comedy moments. Because of one incident the words ‘Elevated position’ will always make me smile. It really is brilliant in ever sense of the word.

And the official GD2008GOTY:
1. Fallout 3: This isn’t just the best game of 2008, no, this is one of the finest games ever made. Ever. Ever. They took Oblivion, stripped out the generic locations, made the leveling system much more interesting, swapped swords and spells for guns and grenades, added character, added interesting quests, added hats. What you are left with is a game that is so brilliant it makes me grin like a fool just thinking about it. Fallout 3 – I salute you.

Mass effect – Yes
L4D – Yes
Fallout 3 – Yes
Dont really agree with FarCry 2 – graphics where good and the attention to detail was good, the story wasnt and it had too many annoyances, the major one being you cant go 5 mins in the middle of no where with out being shot at?!!?! how?
Grid – for me it was just a case of being to sensitive – every bash would fling you and most of the time the car felt like it had been in a pinball machine…. might just be me tho – i do remember getting right pissed of with it and shout a big fuck you at it….
Mass Effect is brilliant, I really do urge you to replay the game, persevere through the grinding and get past the early save you lost. There is a cracking story in there.
RD:GRID – as Roy Walker would put it – Its good but its not right. I think GRID 2 or 3 may however, define the racing genre and force Gran Turismo into a rethink.
L4D – How much fun is this game. Screw the stalky horror genre, lets dump you in shitsville with some guns, some mates and a pissed off witch intent on fisting you with a spiky gauntlet.
FC2 – Sorry WM, but for me this was the disappointment of the year. Even more so than Spore. I never knew walking through Africa could be so dull. Sure it had emotional moments, some ok characters, but when all is said and done, its an FPS. The guns were poor, the engine is awkward and the Map is just too spread out with little in between….Fallout 3 however….
Was brilliant. After modding the pip boy, the game was ace. Good dialogue, a balanced levelling system, a nice learning curve and even some political messages ala MGS4. Bonus.
My GOTY was GTA4, followed closely by L4D, Little Big Planet, Fallout 3 and Braid.
Well it looks like everyone is wrong except me about Far Cry 2. Losers. :P
What mods did you put on the pip boy?
Mass Effect – Can’t agree there, but i never played it solidly, i found it a bit… boring?
Grid – Havnt played, but it looks good.
L4D – Deffinatly a fantastic game :)
FC2 – Yet again i agree, i loved it untill it crashed on one mission and was unfixable :/
Fallout 3 – wouldn’t be my number 1 but yeh is deffinatly a good game lol :P
RD:GRID was an ok game, having the annoucer say ‘hello dumptruck’ every time I started bought a smile to my face.
I used the pip boy glove mod and a thing called pip boy 2.0 where it updates the GUI so you can actually read it without the 1998 WinAmp feel. Which while atmospheric and in line with the aesthetic content of the game, was a pain to read. Green on black died out 15 years ago for a reason.
Great game though.
If I may get you guys to google Zero Punctuation, i don’t know if you’ve heard Yahtzee before, but this week he reviews Far Cry 2 in a racist South African accent, its very good.
I try to keep up with Yahtzee – he can get repetitive though. I also saw his pilot ‘gamedamage’ program which was just awful.
Lol, but when have game shows ever been anything but cringeworthy? Apart from Bits of course, but that was on at ridiculous times of night. Even Violet Berlin’s norks couldn’t save that program on Bravo…. I see a new blog feature on the horizon…
I see one too….
